Update from the South: No new reports of soybean rust this last week. Soybean rust can currently be found on kudzu in six counties in Florida and one county in Texas. New host – coral beans: Soybean rust was confirmed by the USDA on a new host, Erythrina herbacea (common name coral bean or Cherokee bean) collected in Marion County, Florida. Pictures and further information about coral bean can be found here. Interestingly, the coral bean was heavily infected but the kudzu in the vicinity was not. Update from Mexico: There is no rust either on jicama or soybeans at the moment. They do not have any soybeans planted yet. Their planting season is from June to July. In June to July the weather is not optimal for rust, so they do not expect a serious outbreak of rust during that time. The conditions become more favorable for rust development in October.
