Overwintering Update: Soybean rust is still found at low levels in Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia. Plant pathologists in many of the southeastern states suspect they may see more rust shortly because of the abundant rainfall. Rain has bypassed Texas though, and much of the state is in the midst of a severe drought.
Welcome back. I hope that this email finds you well. This year marks the fifth year of soybean rust being in the United States. Like past years, I will be sending regular emails during the season, always on Wednesday unless rust is reported near Iowa. Unlike past years, the messages will not be weekly, but instead every other week.
I am not sure what the best way to describe 2008 is, but it will certainly be a year for future reference. While the weather was wreaking havoc this spring, the one thing that it did not do was bring soybean rust to Iowa. Soybean rust highlight of 2008: Even with soybeans maturing weeks later than normal, soybean rust again was not reported in Iowa!

Update from the South: As expected, new soybean rust finds have cropped up this past week. During this past month, soybean rust has been reported in nine counties in Alabama; seven counties in Arkansas; ten counties in Georgia, five counties in Florida; one county in Louisiana; 13 counties in Mississippi, and one county in Texas.
Update from the south: Several new sites in Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida were reported this past week. Again, this was expected. Perfect weather for soybean rust development continues in many of these areas. Louisiana abandoned their scouting efforts as they recover from Hurricane Gustav and are hoping that Ike continues to track west.

Update from the south: With the increased rain in many southern states, soybean rust has started to show up in new locations. Southern states reported up to 19 inches of rain this past week. During this past week soybean rust was reported in new counties in Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana.
